Pricing Strategy Guide
How to Determine Best Consignment Prices

These are the procedures followed by one experienced shop owner:

Identifying Items to Be Donated

When items are brought into the shop, consignors tell us if they want to donate or not. I explain the options to them in detail, and they choose.

Consignor Agreement and Acknowledgment

The Consignment Agreement can have two options: Donate or Pick Up.

We have an intake form with options to circle size, color, and types of items – so it is a quick write-up. Once completed, we enter the items into our Best Consignment Software database.

Printing Donate Tags

If the items are to be donated, change the tag color to green (or another designation) in the software program under Configure Bar-Code Appearance. Non-donated items can use any other label color.

Enter the items into the program database, print the labels, and attach them to the items. Now, it's clear which items are for donation.

Tracking Item Status

Each consignor has a postcard-sized card with their name, date, and donation initials. This card tracks each item through to its placement on racks and is filed by end dates.

  • In date
  • End date
  • Starting number (_)
  • Do they donate? Yes/No
  • Were there any NTYs? Yes/No
  • Were any items stored for the next season? Yes/No

Notification of Donation

Consider sending a postcard or letter notifying consignors that their end date has been reached, providing a final opportunity to pick up unsold items before donation.

This process is efficient and ensures clarity about item statuses without manually checking tags.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you set prices for consignment items?

Most consignment stores price used items at 25–40% of the original retail price, adjusted for condition, brand, and demand. Resell4.me includes a built-in pricing guide tool where staff can describe an item's type, condition, and brand and receive a suggested price — removing guesswork and creating consistency across employees.

What is a typical consignment commission split?

The most common consignment split is 60/40 — the shop keeps 40% and the consignor receives 60% of the final sale price. Some shops use 50/50 for lower-value items or higher splits (70/30) for high-value pieces to attract premium consignors. Resell4.me lets you set a custom split per consignor or per item category.

How do I handle items that don't sell during the consignment period?

Resell4.me automates the end-of-period process: automatic markdown schedules reduce prices before the period ends, and a "secret code" printed on each item's tag tells staff the designated disposition (return to owner, donate to charity, destroy, or transfer to shop). Batch return processing handles multiple items for the same consignor at once.

How much does Resell4.me consignment software cost?

Resell4.me starts at $49/month for Essentials (or $1,470 as a one-time payment) and $89/month for Professional (or $2,670 one-time). It is cloud-based, works on any device, requires no contract, and includes built-in pricing tools, automated consignor payouts, and barcode label printing.

Should consignment items be priced with or without markdown schedules?

Most successful consignment shops use both a starting price and an automated markdown schedule. Items start at a competitive price, then reduce by a set percentage (typically 10–25%) after 30, 60, or 90 days. Resell4.me can print the markdown schedule directly on the price tag so customers see exactly when prices drop — which drives traffic and repeat visits.
